A diamond is known as the hardest rock in existence and to most of the world it is a piece of jewelry, but do we know what the chemical composition of a rock and how is it formed?A diamond in actuality is carbon in its most concentrated form. While a few diamonds may have trace impurities such as boron or nitrogen, most diamonds are composed mostly of carbon. Carbon is a chemical that is fundamental in the process of life and used in various amounts of ways on the Earths surface. In diamonds, carbon atoms share all four valance electrons with adjacent carbon atoms, which form a tetrahedral unit. The covalent bond that is formed in this process is responsible for many of the diamonds superlative properties. As a result of the highly symmetrical arrangement of eight atoms that are fundamentally arran ged in a repeating structural unit diamond crystals can form a variety of different shapes known as crystal habits. The octahedron is the most common of these crystal habits, but others include cubes dodecahedra and combinations of theses shapes. All however, are manifestations of the cubic crystal system to which the mineral diamond belongs. Diamond crystals that are real do not have entirely smooth faces which can be seen in the trigons that reflect the subtle changes of height in the diamonds face. However some raised trigons that point the same direction as the crystal face can occur from dissolution, etching, and the crystals natural growth. Another notable property that the diamond is well known for is its hardness. Diamonds are the hardest substance known, receiving a ten on Mohs hardness scale. While diamonds are not fragile or prone to breaking they can fracture or shatter. The best place for splitting a diamond is along one of its lines of cleavage as the crystal is know t o have fewer chemical bonds on the plains of its octahedral face which allows for its perfect cleavage. Two of the most valued attributes of the diamond are its brilliance and luster, qualities obtained from the diamonds great ability to refract light. Light that passes through a diamond is reduced to approximately 77,000 miles per second, displaying the maximum amount of reflectance which creates what is referred to as an adamantine luster. When the light energy in the diamond equals the amount needed to change the electron configuration, parts of the spectrum are then absorbed. Pure diamonds are colorless because the visible light does not have enough energy to alter the electron configuration, meaning that no light can be absorbed. However when the diamond contains impurities such as nitrogen, boron, or hydrogen or has structural flaws electron states can be effected by the visible lights energy allowing the diamond to display colors such as yellow, blue, red, violet, real white, black, and many others. Diamonds are poor electrical conductors due to their transparent color; they can however, be used as an insulator and in some rare diamonds, such as the gray-to-blue ones, can be used as semi-conductors. Diamonds are excellent conductors of heat though. Their capacity for heat conduction exceeds that of copper by about four times, when at room temperature. The vibrational energy travels along the strong internal chemical bonds of the crystals. Therefore the incredible strength of the diamond provides excellent thermal conduction as well. Diamonds form in the molten rock at the Earths mantle, about a hundred miles below the surface. In order for a diamond to form the carbon must be subjected to temperatures of at least 752 degrees Fahrenheit and under pressure of at least 435,113lbs per square inch. After being formed diamonds are brought to the surface through powerful magma eruptions that create kimberlite pipes. These pipes were first founded in Kimberly, South Africa, and it is believed that the vast majority of the eruptions occurred between 1,100 million and 20 million years ago. As magma flows through deep fractures in the Earths crust the kimberlite pipes are formed. These eruptions are usually very short, generally being completed in just a few short hours, however, just because they are over rather quickly there strength is not to be underestimated. They originate ate depths three times that of the source of volcanoes and have many more times the power than that of the volcanic eruptions that occur today. Wh en the eruptions occur the magma in the pipes push the diamonds as well as other rocks and minerals through the mantle and crust. My uncle thought that we should master the 50 c bikes before we moved onto the 70 c bikes. We rode those bikes almost every day after school and on the weekends as if the bikes were going to disappear if we didnt ride them. My uncle owned a small piece of land that we spent our days riding around on, which was his back yard. We would often open the front gate so that we could race from the back yard to the front from time to time. But because I didnt live with my uncle I didnt get to spend as much time riding the dirt bikes as my younger cousins did. They became more skilled and more knowledgeable of the bikes than I as time went on. I believe by the time I was eight I had finally worked my way up to the 70 c bikes which I had only dreamed of. The 70 c bikes were way more powerful than I had ever imagined and would put one of those 50 c bikes to shame in a race. By then we were allowed to ride the bikes around the corner and back as long as we didnt go any further. We didnt really have to worry about any cars or anything because most of the people that lived in the neighborhood were fairly old and probably only drove their cars to the mail box and ace. We had fun riding around the small suburban neighborhood on those hot summer days. One day when we were all out riding my uncle wanted me to teach one of my younger female cousins to ride. The two that usually rode with me were male and were about a year younger than I was at the time. So I and my younger cousin were in the backyard and I was telling her all about how to use the throttle, the brake, and when she should switch gears because there was no RPM gauge on the bike and you had to change the gears manually. So you would have to listen to the motor so that you would know when to change the gears. Once she took off she was gone, flying all around the place as if she had been doing it as long as I and my other cousins had. After about an hour or two of riding my uncle felt as if she was ready to test her chances on one of the bigger bikes, so he told me to get one out and put her on it. So I did as I was told and went to the garage and pulled out one of the 70 c bikes because I wasnt going to let her ride the one I was on. Once I got the bike warmed up and put her on it I explained to her that it was Just as the other bikes Just a little bit stronger. And she had on some bunny slippers that were made of a soft tone which were her house shoes. I advised her that she would need to change those because she would need to use the brake more often on this bike rather than on the 50 c bikes. She didnt take my advice but she told me that she wanted me to ride on the back with her because she was nervous. I was eight at the time and didnt speedy pace and as we came to the first turn of the yard I insisted that she turn but her legs were to close the handle bars to turn or so she had said. The bunny slippers she had on were too soft to apply enough force to the brake to stop the bike. So we went head on with my uncles eight foot wooden privacy fence. I dont recall much before hitting the fence, but I do remember telling her to hit the brake. The next thing I knew was that I was on the other side of the fence lying on my back in the neighbors yard and my cousin was wedged between the bike and the fence. We both came out with cuts and bruises but we were okay. The moral of the story is not to ride on the back of an inexperienced rider at any time. A Literary Review of Dante Alighieri’s â€Å"Inferno† Dante Alighieri’s â€Å"Inferno† is a narrative poem describing Dante’s journey through his perception of hell in search of salvation. Dante’s writing of this classic piece was greatly influenced by the politics in Florence during the late thirteenth century but the Inferno is much more than a political symbolic work of literature but is a beautifully poetic and allegorical. Inferno has made a memorable mark in European Literature as a great medieval poem written in vernacular language. Before Dante’s Inferno literary writings were almost all written in Latin, the language of the Catholic Church, but Dante used his native Tuscan dialect which helped unify the Italian language. Dante said his work to be a comedy but he didn’t mean it in a humorous sense but instead as a classical tragedy with a plot having a sad beginning but a happy ending. The Divine comedy consists of a prologue and 33 cantos. Dante and Virgil enter the wide gates of hell and descend through nine circles.In each circle they witness sinners and their punishments for the sins they committed while living on earth. In Dante’s view torture is godly justice. In Canto IX the sinners are the heretics. Canto XI contains the sinners that have committed really bad fraudulent acts. Canto XXXIV contains the souls of the most evil sinners, the traitors to their benefactors. Throughout Dante’s writing symbols are used to represent the will of God and the punishments for the sinners were a reflection of the sin that they committed against God. Dante’s travels take you through different levels of hell searching for salvation.The imperfections and sins of humanity are shown using allegory and irony is used to demonstrate what the consequences are for the actions that the sinners have committed. It begins with Dante the Pilgrim walking in the woods finding himself lost in the dark woods. He struggles to climb a higher road to light but is blocked by three fierce beasts. Here he encounters Virgil the dead poet and he promises to guide Dante through hell and Purgatory and there another spirit would lead him into Paradise because Virgil cannot. â€Å"Have pity on my soul,† cried Dante, â€Å"which ever you are, shade or living man! â€Å"No longer living man† says Virgil, â€Å"though once I was† (p1215, line 67) â€Å"Are you then Virgil, are then that fount from which pours forth so rich a stream of words? †(p1216, line 79). They enter hell which is described as a cave at the center of the earth. On their way down through hell they encounter ledges that are called circles and within these circles people’s souls are being punished for their sins. The punishments in Dante’s hell are a reflection of the sins that were committed on Earth. In Canto IX is the sixth circle which the heretics are punished. The punishment for the heretics was to lie in graves of fire for all eternity. The symbolic retribution here is that since they didn’t believe in life after death while on earth, now dead their bodies and souls were to lie in graves of god’s wrath for eternity. â€Å"There lie arch heretics of every sect, with all disciples; more than you think are packed within these tombs. Like heretics lie buried with their like and the graves burn more or less accordingly† (p1242, line 127). In Canto XI they continue on their way on through where the heretics are punished and the stench is so bad they must stop for a moment.Here Dante sees an inscription on a tomb. â€Å"Within lies Anastasius, the pope Photinus lured away from the straight path† (1246, Line8) Virgil than began to explain the structure of hell to Dante. He starts with the next circle, circle seven, which is the circle of the violent and is divided into three smaller circles. â€Å"Since violence can be used against three persons, into thee concentric rounds it is divided: violence can be done to God, to self, or to one’s neighbor† (p1246, line 29). Then Virgil explains the most evil sin, fraud, but that’s just the mild acts of the fraud, the really bad fraudulent sinners are in circle 9.Dante tells Virgil he understands but questions why these sinners in the previous circles are not also here in the city of flame. Virgil scolds Dante for his seemingly stupid question reminding him of the beloved book. Dante then asks him to explain the sin usury once again. Virgil explains that it is good for man to make a living from art and nature but not when they do it unnaturally, like generating money, this is a violation of nature therefore a sin. Virgil then notices that the constellations in the sky are changing and he says it’s time for them to move on.Canto XXXIV is the final region of hell, and as they approach Virgil shouts out â€Å"Vexilla regis prolevnt inferni† (p1323, line 1) telling Dante to keep his eyes out for Lucifer himself. Here all of the sinners are under ice lying in all different positions catching Dante’s attention. Virgil then decides it’s time for Dante to see Dis and that he will have to be brave. Dante is scared stiff, so scared he almost cannot write but he tries to explain what he is feeling and seeing. â€Å"I did not and was not living either! Try to imagine, if you can imagine, me there, deprived of life and death at once.The king of the vast kingdom of all grief stuck out with half of his chest above the ice† (p1323, line 25) Dante explains that Lucifer is so big that he himself is closer to the size of a giant. He has three heads, one red, one yellow, and one black and underneath them each are a pair of enormous bat like wings. He had six eyes and three mouths and Dante noticed he was eating sinners. The sinners here were traitors to their benefactors. Virgil points out Judas Iscanot, Brutus and Cassius who are all being eaten and who had all betrayed someone of great importance. The subversive level of comedy is evidenced within this particular show with regards to the way in which the girl-girl dynamics that are exhibited within the plot lines so completely and entirely differentiate from the girl-boy dynamics that are evidenced. Naturally, the audience is fully aware of the fact that men and women are different from one another both in physicality and emotional response to key issues; however, the preposterous way in which th is is presented allows for a preposterously absurd level of difference to be noted as a means of allowing the viewer to come to a more actionable understanding of how the sexes relate to one another and oftentimes experience a complete breakdown in rational understanding (Stransky 41).
